Gardening In Houston Spans The Seasons With The Right Plants

Article and photography by Linda B. Gay

We really can garden all year here in Houston. Don't wait for spring. There are many projects and great plants choices for winter, as well.

Don't worry about cool temps, freezes or even snow when keeping your place looking sharp. Try these evergreens for year-round beauty.

• Blue Point Juniper
• Italian Cypress
• Arizona Cypress
• Eleagnus
• Dwarf Youpon Holly
• Green Mound Juniper
• Wax Myrtle
This list is far from all-inclusive, as there are dozens more species that will never be damaged by a freeze in Houston.
For more carefree and certainly more colorful winter choices, try these selections. Again, this is a short list, with many more options available.
• Cyclamen
• Mustard
• Kale/Cabbage
• Alyssum
• Viola/Pansy
• Lobelia
• Dusty Miller

Remember, every inch of your garden does not need
to be filled with plants.

Try colorful pottery containers, statuaries, fountains or garden benches for a dramatic look all year.
There are plant species for every location, be it sunny, hot and dry or shady and damp. Some plants will love it there. Ask your favorite garden professional for suggestions.

“Work less, enjoy more!”
