Summertime is here (well, officially June 20), which goes hand-in-hand with family vacations. We’ve mapped out a fun roundup of ideas for your itineraries in our “Summer Escapes” special section, with options ranging from day trips to quaint, nearby towns to weekend stays in the Hill Country to extended getaways in Big Bend National Park — and everything in between. Get packing!
We take you to Milan, too, for the annual Salone del Mobile, a feast in the latest of home furnishings and accessories designs. Check out the fabulously creative outdoor furniture and lighting innovations, many of which are available right here in Houston.
Back in Texas, “Gardening” shows how you can create a Hill Country-inspired desert oasis right at home. Just follow The Arbor Gate’s basic tips of soil amendments as outlined by our gardening guru, Linda B. Gay.
Speaking of the country, we also visit an elegant ranch home just outside of town, a retreat for three generations of family members all wanting a year-round getaway. And in town, a New Orleans-style manor by Whitestone Builders brings Southern charm to Garden Oaks. It’s a beauty!
You’ll find another beauty of the mid-century kind right in Glenbrook Valley, saved and restored by a hardworking young couple, with the help of 2-year-old son Theodore, determined to keep the house as true to the original 1956 “Parade of Home” showcase. You’ll be amazed at the results.
Summer also equates to several holidays and special occasions, which in turn equates to sales (my train of thought). “Deal Hunter” finds discounts after Memorial Day and before the Fourth of July, as well as suggestions for great gifts for those deserving recipients: Dad, Grad and the Bride. And for Independence Day inspiration, “Editor’s Picks” is everything red, white and blue.
Joey is our “Pet of the Month,” a loving guy who adores grown-ups. He’ll make someone’s life so much richer, just as my rescue buddy and pal, Rufus, does for me. I have to share, so pictured above is Ru-Ru or Lil’ Ru or the multiple other affectionate names I daily bestow upon him. Just looking at him makes me happy!
