Editor's Note

Hey, y’all. We’re getting ready for pickin’ time in the country when savvy shoppers go hunting for antique and vintage one-of-a-kind finds that can’t be found in big box stores. Check out our handy Antique Weeks guide for September and October, with can’t miss stops in Warrenton, Round Top, Carmine and surrounding areas.

We’re also profiling a couple of up-cycled but high-end rentals at the center of it all; we’ve got eye-popping pics of the funky shipping containers turned Flophouzes and the luxe B&Bs over at ARMANDOS Round Top Houses.

It’s also that time of year when we start thinking about back-to-school lunches for kids and perhaps shaking things up at the office for the grown-up set. Our Recipe section shows just how easy it is to get the bento look.

We’ve also touched base with some of the top manufacturers and we’ve got a sneak peek at this fall’s furniture collections. Even swapping out one key piece in a room is enough to freshen the look.

For inspiration, be sure to turn to our feature on notable architect Jay Baker. He’s out with a new book on some of his favorite projects and we’ve been given an all access visual pass to these oh-so-fab swankiendas.

If the thought of a major remodeling project seems overwhelming, then visit our feature on a Woodland Heights home that almost became a teardown. Interior Designer Stacie Cokinos knew there was something under that neglected facade and you won’t believe the transformation.

There’s nothing sexy about concrete, but stained concrete is a whole different subject. In our Project section we’re looking at how acid washes, stains and patterns can transform the look of these tough-as-nails surfaces.

We also consulted the pros about smart home integration: The technology of home security has really evolved with amazing high tech gadgets that protect and serve.

Other ways to defend — either against the sun’s hot rays or the prying eyes of neighbors — is through the use of trees. Read more about how to select and plant trees in Gardening.

Don’t miss this month’s Houston Build Expo, Houston Design Center’s designer sample sale, the Vintage Glass and Antique Show and the popular AIA SandCastle competition; read more in our Calendar.

Over at the Houston SPCA, little Dingo is all smiles and he’s looking for a forever home. Beware, though. This little guy is cute as all get out.

From our home to yours,
Susie Tommaney
